MELITA

A short documentary focusing on the craft of Maltese beekeeping and Honey Bee species native to Malta, in a time when these are threatened by the rise of urbanisation and the effects of climate change. The film looks at the connection between the decline of the beekeeping community and how that is affecting the fading Maltese identity and their connection to nature.

1) The national personification of the islands of Malta. The name originates from the Punic-Roman name for Malta’s ancient, then capital, Melite: now the city of Mdina.

2) Derived from the Ancient Greek word for ‘honey’ - meli - or ‘land of honey’ - melitos.
